Nine years ago, I had the unique opportunity to be featured on OneDay, a reality TV programme by Kapri TV. My episode, One Day with Marye Toxopeus, was a candid look at my life as a young, aspiring fashion illustrator living in the creative chaos of Hackney, London. Watching the video now always makes me smile—it’s funny, nostalgic, and a little surreal to see the fashion, the lifestyle, and the whirlwind of that time in my life.
Hackney Warehouse Days: Where It All Began
Back then, I had just graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Fashion Illustration from London College of Fashion. I was living in a wild and wonderful warehouse packed with young artists, designers, and creatives. It was a true melting pot of ideas, and while it may have been a bit messy (okay, very messy), it was also an incredibly inspiring place.
This was where I first dipped my toes into live drawing at events, collaborating with the other artists in the warehouse. There was always something happening, from art exhibitions to music performances, and it felt natural to capture these moments through illustration.
A Highlight: Winterville at Victoria Park
One event that stands out is Winterville at Victoria Park. Our warehouse crew took over an events tent and turned it into a festive treasure trove of artisan vendors. There were beautiful handmade pieces everywhere—jewelry, lamps, and unique gifts—and I set up a station to create live portraits. The whole experience was magical. I loved the challenge of drawing quickly while capturing the personality of each person who sat in front of me.
Reflections on the OneDay Feature
Seeing myself on OneDay is a mix of pride and amusement. The show captured the energy and determination it took to establish myself as an artist while showcasing the real-life quirks of my early career. It’s hilarious to revisit some of the moments and fashion choices (let’s just say, they were very Hackney circa 2010s), but it also reminds me of how far I’ve come since then.
While my style and approach have evolved, the heart of my work—connecting with people through art—has stayed the same. The episode feels like a time capsule of a pivotal moment in my journey, and it’s something I’ll always treasure.
